“Even though she graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in accounting, Serena Morones always knew that her professional life would be about more than crunching numbers day after day.
An Oregon native who grew up in Roseburg, Morones actually hopped on the accounting track thinking that it would be a good way to prepare for a career in law. After college, she joined PricewaterhouseCoopers as a staff auditor for a couple years, then served as corporate controller for two different businesses.
But neither title fit her well.
“I came to realize I wasn’t enjoying accounting very much,” Morones said. “It wasn’t creative enough for me. I just felt like I was more of a risk taker, more creative and maybe more ambitious.”
Then, on the verge of heading to law school, Morones discovered the field of business valuation and forensic accounting. To her, the thought of investigating financial question marks — and possible malfeasance — and supporting attorneys with testimony in the courtroom seemed a tad more exciting than the daily grind of straight-up accounting.”
